Day 32 – Mitchell to Surat

We were woken at 1.00 am with alarms and noises coming from the Redarc electrical cupboard. Basically it was a low battery warning alarm and in the end I had to disengage everything electrical so that we could get back to sleep. This meant that the fridge was off but the temperatures were at freezing point so we weren’t too worried about food spoilage. That alarm is not what you want to hear when you are freecamping!!

I was up very early to check everything and found that the van batteries were almost completely dead and that as we had no power; we had no water pump, no fridge and could not even flush the toilet. Fortunately I met another vanner near the amenities and we commented on the heavy frost this morning and when I mentioned our problem, he immediately offered us a loan of his generator to get us going. It’s this great vanner spirit that makes this style of travel so enjoyable, and reaffirms one’s faith in humankind.

After a couple of hours on the generator we had a decent charge in the batteries and things seemed to be back under control – at least for the time-being. We took off for Roma and stopped at Muckadilla as there was a tap in the free camp. We filled our water tank and kept going to Roma. We stopped there and bought coffees and a nut loaf for morning tea. We drove around Roma and liked what we saw.

Then it was back on the highway in the direction of Surat. We had to stop for a kangaroo and a couple of emus. There were bad roads and plenty of road works.

We had lunch at Hema 863Q Free Camp Fishing and Restocking Club Park in Surat. It was a nice place but very crowded. Ann rang ahead to St George and found that there was no room at any of the caravan parks which was a problem as we needed power for the van to recharge the batteries, etc.

We drove around Surat and found the Surat Caravan Park. Not wishing to take the risk of not having a powered site for the night, I pulled into a drive through ensuite spot and started setting up while Ann walked down to the pub to sort out the paperwork. We then had a wander around town (didn’t take too long) and then returned to have coffee by the van and got chatting with Gary from the Sterling next to us. We later showered and went to the pub with Sue and Gary for a few drinks and had a great night. They live in their van and do casual work all over the country. It seems like a close to ideal lifestyle.

At this point we had to make a decision about the van’s electricals. Do we try to get things fixed somewhere on the road and then take our time heading home or do we head back home quickly and get it done there. We decided that as we were quite remote and not very close to any main centres it could be difficult finding someone to fix things so we would head back home via caravan parks and make sure things were fixed by someone we knew and trusted before our next Big Adventure.

Day 31 – Stubby Bend (Tambo) to Mitchell

When we woke up this morning it was very cold and windy at our beautiful camp spot.

After showers and breakfast we headed for Augathella, which we inadvertently bypassed (thanks Garmin) but we continued on to Morven where we checked out a camp spot at the recreation reserve. Very nice – we would stay there. We stopped at a camp spot in Mungallala and filled up the water tanks as they were getting a bit low.

Then we went on to the Neil Turner Weir freecamp area in Mitchell. This is a great spot and quite a few vans are here. It looks as though people stay here for a while, not just overnight as with many freecamps. It also looks like it has been very wet and muddy, but we have a good spot for the night. It has been a long day and a hard drive with awful roads and loads of roadkill to avoid.

We are still having issues with the van electrics and will need to go to a caravan park tomorrow to recharge everything. Bummer!

Day 30 – Longreach to Stubby Bend Near Tambo

We left Longreach about 10.15 am after showers, feeding the Brolga family and discussing washing machines with a couple from Melbourne in a neighbouring van.

We stopped at Barcaldine for lunch – pies from the bakery in the van with coffee and apple slice. Then on to Blackall for a quick stop and on further to Stubby Bend free camp near Tambo for the night. We arrived about 3.30 pm.

We have been experiencing some issues with the caravan batteries apparently not accepting charge from the solar panel but everything seems OK tonight. We spent a gorgeous afternoon by the Barcoo River and later had pasta dinner in van.

Day 29 – Winton to Longreach

We left Winton about 10 am to finally head back south.

It was a bad road but we were making good time until 19 km north of Longreach a car flicked a stone into our windscreen which resulted in a big star about the size of a 50c coin. We pulled into Longreach and checked with the O’Brien’s Windscreens representative there. They needed the Ute without the van for a couple of hours so we checked into Longreach Tourist Park again. This time we were given a drive through site in the newer area of the park. Very spacious and the brand new amenities were really nice and definitely much better than the old end where we had stayed last time.

I took the Ute to have the windscreen fixed. Fortunately the damage could be repaired so we did not need to replace the windscreen.

Later we had a refreshing drink or two at the Woolshed Bar followed by pasta for tea in the van.

Day 28 – Winton

We had a slow start today. Ann is having some trouble with her hip and what appear to be some spider bites, so we took things pretty easy.

After an early lunch we headed off for some four-wheel driving out of town to visit the Age of Dinosaurs Exhibition and Laboratory. This was fascinating and the guides did a great job of making everything interesting for the very diverse tour group. We didn’t realise how competitive the various dinosaur sites are about having the biggest or the oldest bones, etc. As part of the tour we visited some sheds where volunteers were working with basically dentists’ drills to remove rock from petrified dinosaur bone fragments for later display. No doubt a worthwhile task but the working conditions would be far from ideal.

Day 27 – Winton

A cold morning turned into a very warm, sunny day.

We were up about 9 am and then off into town to see The Waltzing Matilda Centre. Apart from the historical stuff, which was certainly very interesting, Ann was particularly interested in some quilts that were on display. It was all very impressive and we had lunch there at the cafe – pie and cappuccino.

We then visited the fruit and veggie cool room and shop and on to the Spar supermarket for a few bits and pieces and made our way back to the van. Ann had a quiet rest while I explored the near by Diamantina Truck and Machinery Museum and took a few photos.

Later it was off to “Banjo’s Barn” at the caravan park for a roast dinner and tremendously funny dinner entertainment by bush poets Mel and Susie. It was a truly excellent night.

Day 26 – Longreach to Winton

We were up early for breakfast, pack up the van, showers and then hit the road. We stopped for coffee at the Morella rest area.

Further along the highway a Policeman pulled us over for a breath test!! All OK.

Another stop and then on to Winton where we checked into the Matilda Country Caravan Park.

We had some lunch and then drove into town for a long walk to check out the pubs and shops. We walked along Arnos Wall, which is full of all sorts of bits and pieces including car and bike parts, furniture and even the kitchen sink. We bought a Serpentine Jasper pendant and matching earrings at the Opal shop in Winton.

We also checked out other caravan parks and would consider staying at the Tatts Hotel Caravan Park IF we could get a drive through site with water and power.

We picked up some light beers and returned to the van for a rest.

The Caravan Park is pretty full but we have a good spot, although we are next door to a BP Roadhouse which had a couple of B-triples full of smelly cattle parked there for their break. Phew!!

We had dinner in the van and an early night, lulled to sleep by the sound of shuffling, mooing cattle.

Day 25 – Longreach

Yet another slow morning. We did a bit of washing and ironing, sweeping, checked tyre pressures, and other odd jobs around the caravan.

Ann cooked up a delicious frittata for lunch, after which we went for a walk around the caravan park and enjoyed more ice creams from the kiosk.

Another lazy day enjoying this beautiful weather!

Day 24 – Longreach

Yet another lovely sunny day here – around 27 degrees with a clear blue sky. Ann did some washing and we had a slow morning enjoying the warm sunshine.

We drove into town but most places were closed so we went for a walk in the botanical gardens near the Stockman’s Hall of Fame. There are some lovely stone buildings and fences, a well maintained garden and some beautiful poems carved in stone as well as some statues celebrating the women of the west.

Then it was back to the caravan park to discover that the camp had been invaded by around 100 school kids on an excursion of some sort. Fortunately they were on the other side of the park so we settled down with some ice creams and to read in the shade.

A noisy family in Jayco Flamingo stayed next to us for the night – just as well it was only 1 night. We had a delicious roast dinner under the stars while they were at the camp kitchen.

It was a balmy night and warm enough to leave the hatch over our bed open all night so we could sleep under the stars.

Day 23 – Longreach

Lovely sunny day around 25 degrees. Up early and off to the School of the Air for a tour. The lady who ran the tour had been a student there and so had her grown up children, so she gave it a very personal touch.

100_0144_Stomped

We stopped at IGA on the way home and picked up some supplies for lunch at the van.

We then headed off to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame. This is a very big and impressive complex and we were there all afternoon.

We’re really enjoying this great weather!
