Day 17 – Mortlake to Home

We woke up feeling very level today, which was a good feeling.  The sky was blue but it was a bit “crisp”, to say the least.  Never-the-less, we were keen to get going and made an early start.

Once on the highway heading towards Geelong, it was very pleasant cruising.  The weather was treating us kindly, the road was in pretty good condition, and life was good.

This is a very beautiful part of the country, and seems to have received more rain that other areas we had recently travelled through as there was a lot more greenery around.  Whilst there is cropping here we did notice more sheep and cattle than previously.

At one stage we went through a memorial drive of pine trees, which was very impressive.

The closer we got to Geelong we saw more and more of the historic dry stone walls that feature through this area.  It is fantastic that the land owners have taken the effort to maintain these walls, which are eons old.  They obviously solve two problems – doing something useful with all the rocks in the ground while providing useful fencing for livestock.

In some areas there were still obviously problems with the rocky ground and piles of stones were obvious.

Near the town of Cressy we turned off the Geelong Road towards Inverleigh, and then eventually onto the Teesdale-Inverleigh Road to visit Ann’s brother Brendan and his wife Kaye who have lived in Teesdale for many years.  It was great to catch up with family news over a cup of coffee and Kaye then suggested that perhaps we could have lunch in Bannockburn, just 10 kms or so away.  They thought it might be a nice way to end our Short Adventure.

We followed them into Bannockburn to our destination at the Station Café, which is actually in the old bluestone Bannockburn Station.  What a place!  Fantastic food featuring local produce and wines.  Lovely surroundings with tables in various period decorated rooms inside and tables and chairs outside, including under a huge oak tree.  We would definitely recommend that you visit this lovely café destination if you are in the area.  It certainly was a great way to end this trip.

Finally we had to go our separate ways so it was back on the Geelong Road, over Westgate Bridge, through Burnley Tunnel, along Eastlink, and pretty soon we were home.  This is actually a very direct trip, mostly on freeways (or tollways) with only a few sets of traffic lights from one end to the other.

So now we are home at the conclusion of our 2016 Short Adventure in Bertha, our Birdsville motorhome.

Now we need to clean Bertha inside and out and get ready for our next adventure.

Still living the dream …

Stay tuned…..

Canberra to Home

Canberra:

We enjoyed several days in Canberra catching up with Katie and Mick, and generally winding down before our final run home to Melbourne.  We visit Canberra on a semi-regular basis and there are always new and interesting things to see and do.  This time Floriade was on, as was the Thai Food and Cultural Festival.  Plus we went to the Saturday morning Farmers Market at EPIC and had a good look around Gold Creek Historic Village.

Our focus was, however, on family time, and we shared several meals with Mick and Katie, including a delicious dinner at the Taj Agra Indian restaurant.  The highlight of this particular trip was a scenic drive around Canberra with Mick as our Tour Guide.  We saw some great scenery including Cotter Dam, Uriarra Crossing, a pumping station, and enjoyed coffee and cake with a view at the Scope Cafe at Mount Stromlo Observatory.  It is ten years since the devastating ACT bushfires in 2003 which destroyed five telescopes, workshops, seven homes and the heritage listed administration building at Mount Stromlo.  The only telescope to escape the fires was the 1868 15-centimetre Farnham telescope.  The Café houses an art exhibition and articles and artifacts from the fires as a reminder of that terrible time ten years ago.

Back on the Road:

After saying our farewells to Katie and Mick, from Canberra we headed back to the Hume Highway towards home – the BT-50 was pretty well on auto-pilot.  We had a quick coffee stop at Bookham some 90 kms from Canberra and another stop at Tarcutta to refuel and to visit the Truck Drivers Memorial which commemorates truckies who have died on the roads across Australia.  It is a very moving and sobering memorial.

For lunch we stopped at Jags Café in Holbrook – a town perhaps best known for its submarine.  We have regularly stayed at Holbrook on our way to or from Canberra but this is the first time we had visited since the highway bypass has been finished.  Time will tell what effect the bypass will have on the town.  From there it was on to Painters Island Caravan Park in Wangaratta for an overnight stop.  It seemed only fitting that we should spend the last night of our trip at Painters Island as this was where we spent our first night away from home on our 2013 Big Adventure.

From Wang it was a pretty straight forward trip down the Hume then across to the Tullamarine Freeway and eventually across Bolte Bridge and onto the Monash and home.

We had a little difficulty getting the fiver in through the back gates as the olive tree has grown considerably since we left.  Fortunately our neighbours Barbara and Len helped out – we tied a rope around the olive tree and they pulled it back over the fence to make a bit more room for us to squeeze the van past.  The secateurs will be out there shortly.

So, finally we were home after almost exactly four months away and covering 15,999 kilometres.  Barbara and Len were kind enough to invite us in for a cup of tea and lunch, which was a great way to settle back home.  Now begins the job of emptying and cleaning the fiver, and preparing it for our next Big Adventure.

We can’t wait!

Day 38 – Euroa to Home

We left Euroa at about 9.30 am. It was very damp and foggy and as it had rained quite a bit during the night I had to engage 4WD to drive out of our site. There were other travellers who had come in the night before cold and wet as they had not been able to get into Benalla either.

We headed down the Hume Highway and stopped at the Service Centre at Wallen for coffee and finally arrived home at about 1 pm. We unhitched and started some washing, turned on the central heating and had lunch. Then the heating stopped and would not restart. I rang Brivis and logged a service call but did not hear back. We unloaded some more stuff from the van and went food shopping. I’m exhausted. Ann whipped up a delicious dinner before an early night in our “usual” bed.

Everything else can wait a couple of days.

Despite a few grumbles over the last few days, we really did have a fantastic Winton Adventure!
